Music of the Week: Volume 1

In the interest of spreading the music that I love I’m going to make it a regular installment to point ya’ll in the direction of some music that’s been spinning on my mp3 player. I have a feeling it’ll be more on the DJ end of the spectrum, but that’s just cuz I rather like the continuous flow that a good mix provides. Also, they tend to be free to download. But I’m making a promise to myself to extend beyond the dance genres, as I do rock out as well. So here goes…

First up, some international flavor with Red Ant of the Future World Funk Crew out of Belgium. The vast majority of Red Ant’s mixes are nu skool breaks, which is cool, cuz I loves me some breaks. They’re all quite stellar, albeit more the frenetic side, but I’m really digging his Sex-O-Matic mix as it’s rather groovy, sexy, and beat driven as opposed to the intense basslines that dominate a lot of his other mixes which oft times can be a bit too much. Next is Boreta, a local San Francisco DJ who is creating his own beats but mostly mixing complimentary tracks. This mix is rather glitchy and downtempo and not really dance music, but I’m not always shaking my ass and need some tunes to chill me out. What caught my ear with this offering is at the 57 minute mark he drops Radiohead’s ‘Meeting in the Aisle’, which is a dreamy instrumental that you’d never guess was a Radiohead track, mostly because it’s instrument and only available on the Karma Police EP. I’ve always wished it would get a nice extended remix treatment, and Boreta adds a few layers, but not quite what I was hoping for. Though, it was still a nice suprise. Download here

Pot will make you go crazy

Some so-called scientists across the pond have been doing some studying, and found that if you smoke pot more than 50 times before you’re 18, you’re three times more likely to develop schizophrenia.

Project leader Stanley Zammit noted, “If cannabis does indeed increase the risk of developing schizophrenia, then you could potentially prevent hundreds of people getting the mental illness if cannabis was not available in the population.”

I have to call bullshit. First of all, this study is purely correlational, but the article and findings imply that it’s causational. There’s a huge difference. In the study they could’ve also tracked say, what color shirt they wore, or whether or not they ate bacon. Analysis might find that those who wore yellow shirts and ate little bacon were 8 times more likely to go bat-shit crazy. Does that mean that yellow shirts and not eating bacon cause insanity? No, it just means insane people have poor choice in clothing and food.

Some other awesome pot research

Dance Music Genres

Amy and I go out dancing quite often. 99 times out of 100 it’s DJ music, and to most people it’s all techno or house. But really, there are as many different styles of DJ music as there are DJs. And on a fairly regular basis I seem to get into arguments with people about the fact that DJ music isn’t all the same and what genres are actually kickass (FYI, trance sucks). Fortunately, someone has taken the time to map out all the different genres and subgenres and how they’ve evolved and are connected to each other. This matrix is really detailed, and for some of the subgenres the differences are really subtle, but when you’ve listened to dance music for 15+ years, you can hear the differences.
