Preparations for Burning Man are in the works. However, I really only have a few things to do:
1. Have some clothes made by my wonderful friend Miranda tomorrow night.
2. Fuel, fuel, and more fuel. I’m guessing there’ll be a TON of LED hoops this year, so I’m going to focus on fire. I’m REALLY excited to bust out the Flaming Pizza Toss. Mmm, dangerous!
3. Acquire some new records and practice for the Friday night party at the SugarCube. That’s right, I get to DJ in the middle of the playa!! I’ll have some sick shit to unleash on the masses.
I’ve been a bedroom dj for years, occasionally playing out at a friend’s party here and there. I haven’t really been determined to become a DJ, mainly because there are so many great DJ’s out there, but also because I hadn’t had a sound which I felt was representative of me. However, that’s changed as I’ve picked up a bunch of material which I’m really stoked on and I’ve had some opportunities to bust out. And I really do enjoy sharing music with friends and am totally happy to have had the opportunity recently.
However, I have a problem…a DJ name. I decided on OBI due to my last name being Oberhelman and because it was a nickname I had through college so it seemed appropriate and the thought of resurrecting the nickname was comforting. But last night I did a quick search and lo and behold there’s already a DJ Obi who’s a hip hop DJ in LA. Now, I don’t plan on spinning much hip hop if any, but I’m generally disappointed to learn what I thought was a remotely original name isn’t. So what to do? Keep the name or find something else? This naming thing is totally weak…
